Mahabaleshwar is a 1,372 m plateau town in the Western Ghats of Satara district, 120 km from Pune and 215 km from Mumbai, and the largest hill station in Maharashtra. It is a weekend escape built around about 25 named viewpoints, an old Shiva temple complex at the source of the Krishna river, and strawberry farms that supply most of India's crop. Two nights covers the points, the fort and the market without rushing; one night is a squeeze and three is only worth it if you add trekking or Tapola.

Get around
There is no useful local bus network for sightseeing. Most visitors hire a car with driver for the day (hotels arrange it) or drive their own car; roads to the points are paved with signage. A government conduct tour bus covers about 11 points in roughly 4 hours, booked a day ahead at the bus stand, commentary in Marathi and some Hindi. Points sit on different edges of the plateau, so group them by direction rather than zig-zagging.

- Hill roads are narrow with blind bends and monsoon landslides; avoid driving after dark in heavy rain.
- Entry fee is charged per person and per car at the town boundary and again by Panchgani council if you pass through; count your tickets.
- Strawberry and honey stalls quote high first prices; bargain.
Mahabaleshwar is a low-crime hill town and safe for tourists, including solo women in the market area. The real risks are hill-road driving, monsoon landslides and leeches on trails, monkeys at the points, and touts around the bus stand and strawberry stalls.
