Maffra
Give Maffra one night, or a half-day stop between Sale and Stratford: the vehicle museum and a Maffra pie are the whole town.
Maffra is a small Gippsland dairy and sugar-beet town on the Macalister River, 15 minutes from Sale and 5–10 minutes from Stratford. Its drawcards are a 160-vehicle motor museum, the sugar beet story and a bakery pie. Most travellers pass through by car; a night here makes sense if you want a quiet base for the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail or the High Country road to Dargo.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Public transport is thin: the V/Line coach from Traralgon runs daily, the Sale coach once a day Monday to Friday; buy paper tickets at Traralgon or Sale station, not in Maffra.
- Most kitchens close in the early afternoon and reopen around 17:00; check individual café, bakery and takeaway hours before you plan a meal.
- Summer fire danger in the surrounding bush can close roads fast: check the VicEmergency app before driving towards Dargo.
- 4G coverage is available in town; check coverage on the back roads before you leave and download maps in advance.
Very safe for a town of its size; the real risks are wildlife on the roads at dusk, summer fire weather and unpatrolled surf at Seaspray.
