Maerdy
Y Maerdy
Skip Maerdy as a base: a half-day mining-history stop in the Rhondda Fach, 40–60 min by bus from Pontypridd. Sleep in Cardiff or Pontypridd.
Maerdy is a former coal village of about 3,100 people at the head of the Rhondda Fach, above Ferndale. The pit closed in 1990 and the village is now a quiet residential place with a handful of memorials, two reservoirs on the mountain above it and a pub. It works as a short stop if you are following south Wales mining history, not as a place to stay.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Buses are infrequent, especially on Sundays: check the last return before you set out.
- The mountain road over to Aberdare is steep and exposed; ice and low cloud in winter.
- Reservoir paths are unmarked in places and phone signal is patchy on the tops.
- Village pubs and cafés keep short hours; some close early on weekdays.
A quiet valley village and generally safe by day. The real risks are the weather on the mountain above it, infrequent buses and unlit roads after dark: carry a light and check the last bus.
