Give Mae Sot one full day if you are crossing to Myanmar or heading for the border markets; two nights if you want the hot springs and waterfalls too.
Mae Sot is a Thai-Myanmar border trade town in Tak Province, 87 km from Tak and about 492 km from Bangkok, at roughly 210 m elevation. Most travellers pass through on the Friendship Bridge crossing to Myawaddy, or stop for the Burmese market, the herbal sauna and the waterfalls south of town. It is not a resort town: the draw is the mix of Thai, Burmese, Karen and Mon life, plus cheap beds and food.

Get around
The centre is walkable. Bicycles rent for about 50 baht a day and motorbikes about 150 baht a day at many guest houses (helmet supplied; police fine riders without one). Motorbike and tuk-tuk taxis cluster near the Burmese market and outside Tesco; expect 50–100 baht for most trips in town, and agree the price first. Songthaews run north on Hwy 105 and south on Hwy 1090 from the market.

Etiquette
- Greeting: A wai (palms together, slight bow) to return a greeting; a smile and nod for shop staff; avoid: Waiing children or service staff first — it confuses; hugging strangers
- Head and feet: Keep feet on the floor, sit with legs folded to the side in temples; avoid: Touching heads (even children's), pointing feet, stepping over people or food
- Temples: Covered shoulders and knees, shoes off, sit lower than monks; avoid: Women touching monks or handing them things directly; climbing Buddha images
- Monarchy: Stand for the royal anthem in cinemas and at 08:00 and 18:00 in public places; avoid: Any joke or comment about the royal family; stepping on a banknote
- Keeping calm: Stay polite and smiling when things go wrong ('jai yen' — cool heart); avoid: Raising your voice; public anger loses the argument

Scams and watch-outs
- The border with Myanmar can close or tighten with little notice: check current status before you plan a crossing.
- Gem and jade shops are mostly wholesale and hard to judge; assume you cannot tell real from fake without research.
- Smoke from agricultural burning peaks around Mar–Apr and can cut visibility and air quality.
- Some waterfall and trekking routes are seasonal and closed at the height of the rains, roughly May–Oct.
- Motorbike rental usually means leaving your passport as a bond: prefer a cash deposit if the shop allows it.
Mae Sot is a working border town, not a party town: petty theft is the main risk and the border itself is the real variable. Keep your passport secure, agree taxi fares first, and check the Myanmar crossing status before you commit.
