Open to traffic. Traffic still runs on a narrowed roadway after the 2018 remodel widened the sidewalks. Private cars from outside the area face restrictions under Madrid's low-emission zone for the center (check rules for rental cars).

- Distraction thefts: someone asks for directions or points to a 'stain' on your clothes while an accomplice lifts your wallet. Keep a hand on your bag.
- Street sellers of fake musical tickets: buy only at the theater box office or the official website.

- Wide, level sidewalks after the 2018 remodel; the avenue climbs gently toward Callao.

A line of history
Gran Vía was cut through older streets in three stages starting in 1910, and filled with bank headquarters, hotels, cinemas and one of Europe's early skyscrapers, the Telefónica building of 1929.

For the architecture and the evening atmosphere, yes. For shopping, it is mostly international chains you can find at home.
