Days in spring and autumn often reach the low 20s °C, with nights dropping close to freezing in April and October. Summer afternoons push past 30 °C before the clouds build, and the monsoon can drop heavy rain in under an hour. Winter days can be sunny and near 10 °C while the night falls well below freezing.

Pack layers rather than one heavy coat, a hat and sunglasses for the altitude, and a light rain shell from July to September. Sunscreen matters even in winter: the UV at this elevation is stronger than the temperature suggests.

The single busiest stretch of the year is late September into the first weekend of October, when the area's balloon and harvest events draw visitors from across the country. Rooms in Madrid and the surrounding towns sell out weeks ahead and rates can double or more; the same weekend is the worst time to arrive without a booking.

Outside that window, weekends in May, June, September and October are moderately busy, and weekdays in those months are noticeably quieter. January to March is the cheapest stretch apart from holiday weekends, with the trade-off of cold nights and some seasonal closures. When is the best time to visit Madrid?
