Madona is a small Vidzeme town of about 7,400 people, 3–3.5 h by bus from Riga. It is a service centre for the surrounding lakes, forests and hills, and the practical gateway to Gaiziņkalns, Latvia's highest point, and to Cesvaine Palace. The town itself is a couple of hours on foot; the reason to come is what sits around it, which needs wheels.
