Madiun is a mid-size East Java rail city, about 2 h from Solo and 2 h from Surabaya on the Jakarta–Surabaya line. It is known for pecel, brem, bluder and a railway industry museum, not for a sightseeing list. Most travellers use it as a one-night break or a base for Sarangan lake and Mount Lawu, 30–60 min away by road.

Get around
The centre is small: becak and ojek (motorbike taxi) cover most trips for Rp10,000–25,000, taxis are metered but scarce. Ask your hotel to call a car for Sarangan or the museum. Walking works in the daytime but pavements are uneven and scooters use them.
