Madison is Wisconsin's capital, built on an isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, with the University of Wisconsin at its centre. It is compact, walkable and bike-first, and most of what a visitor wants sits within about 2 km of the Capitol. It is a two-night stop, or a base for the Greater Madison Area, not a week-long destination.
