Maceió
Give Maceió 3 nights: base in Ponta Verde or Jatiúca, do the Pajuçara natural pools at low tide, and use one day for the south or north coast.
Maceió is the capital of Alagoas and a beach city first: the urban coast runs from Pajuçara through Ponta Verde to Jatiúca, and the state's best beaches sit within day-trip range north and south. The city itself is calm and low-rise by Brazilian big-city standards, with a small colonial and museum core in Jaraguá and the lagoon-side lace workshops at Pontal da Barra. Three nights covers the pools, the urban beaches and one coast day; add nights if you want to slow down or push to Maragogi or São Miguel dos Milagres.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- Normal big-city precautions: no phone out on empty streets, no walking the beach after dark, use Uber at night.
- The Pajuçara pools are only walkable at low tide — check the tide table the day before and book a jangada.
- Bus fares and the card rule change; carry cash for minibuses and confirm the fare on board.
- Sea temperature stays 26–27 °C year-round, but May–July rain is heavy and can cancel boat trips.
Maceió is calmer than Recife or Salvador, but take the usual big-city precautions: no phone out on quiet streets, no beach walks after dark, Uber at night, and only carry what you need.
