Macau is a special administrative region of China and was a Portuguese territory until 1999. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Cotai Strip holds large casino resorts built in the last two decades. Ferries and a bridge link it to Hong Kong and mainland China.

Get around
Free shuttle buses link casino resorts, the ferry terminals and the airport, and are usable even if you're not a guest. Public buses are cheap and cover the whole territory; the historic centre itself is walkable. Taxis are metered but can be hard to hail at peak times.

Language
Cantonese is the language of the street and the Portuguese you see on every sign is rarely spoken. Mandarin is widely understood thanks to mainland visitors; English is solid in resorts and hotels, patchy in noodle shops and taxis.
- Taxi drivers often speak only Cantonese or Mandarin: show the destination in Chinese characters.
- Patuá (Macanese creole) survives in theatre and a few families; it is on China's national intangible heritage list.
- Street names on signs are Portuguese ('Rua', 'Travessa', 'Largo'); maps may use the Chinese name instead.
Etiquette, safety and scams

- Greeting: A nod or handshake; 'nei hou' (你好) or 'bom dia' both land well; avoid: Hugging or kissing on the cheek with Chinese acquaintances
- Temples: Enter quietly, leave incense and offerings alone; avoid: Photographing worshippers' faces up close
- Churches: Covered shoulders; silence during Mass; avoid: Walking around during services
- Casinos: Watch from behind the rope; ask before sitting at a table; avoid: Photos, touching chips at others' tables, giving advice
- Queues: Line up for buses, taxis and bakeries; avoid: Assuming a crowd is not a queue
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; avoid: Clocks as gifts (death association) and sets of four
- Dining: Share dishes; let the host order; avoid: Sticking chopsticks upright in rice
- Money: Pay in MOP when you have it; avoid: Expecting HKD change
Scams and watch-outs
- Typhoon signals can suspend ferries to Hong Kong with little notice: build a buffer day into your schedule if you have a connecting flight.
- Carry your passport at every border crossing, including between checkpoints within Macau and into mainland China.
- Casino-resort prices skew high: eat where locals do, away from the resort strip, for normal prices.
- Streets around the Ruins of St Paul's get extremely crowded on weekends and Chinese public holidays.
Very safe; typhoons, crowd crush at peak times and casino-adjacent money-changer scams are the main things to watch.
