Lyon in April: what to expect

April is Lyon's transition month. Winter grey gives way to real spring: afternoons in the mid-teens to high teens Celsius, mornings still cold enough for a jacket, and a mix of sun and passing showers. The city sits in the Centre and east zone of France, where April rates "ok" rather than "best" — May and June are the sweet spot — but April is already comfortable for walking.

The Rhône valley wind can make the riverside feel cooler than the thermometer suggests, especially on the Presqu'île and along the Berges du Rhône. Rain usually arrives as short showers rather than set-in drizzle, so a single compact shell is enough. Snow is done in the city; the Alps are still skiing, which matters if you plan a side trip.

Crowds sit at medium for the month as a whole. The variable is the French Easter school holidays, which fall in April in most years and run about two weeks: family travel peaks, TGV seats to Lyon fill earlier, and hotel rates in the centre firm up. Outside those dates the city is noticeably calmer than in June.

Prices are medium. Expect lower midweek rates in the first half of the month and around Easter Monday, and cheaper beds in the Part-Dieu business district at weekends, when corporate demand drops. Museum and transport costs do not change with the season.

Easter is the anchor of the month: church services, family visits and a public holiday Monday. Dates move each year, so check the calendar before booking. Beyond that, Lyon's spring calendar is mostly markets, terrace openings and the start of the outdoor season along the rivers.

April suits the city on foot. Old Lyon and the Fourvière hill are at their best before the summer heat, and the traboules of Croix-Rousse are more pleasant to explore now than in July. The Berges du Rhône and the Parc de la Tête d'Or are green and busy with locals.

If you want a day out, the Beaujolais vineyards and the hill villages of the Monts du Lyonnais are within reach by car or train, and the Alps are still open for a final ski weekend early in the month. Save longer Provençal trips for May, when the south warms properly.

Pack for two seasons in one day: a light jacket or sweater for mornings and evenings, a T-shirt for sunny afternoons, and a compact rain shell. Comfortable shoes matter — Lyon's cobbles, stairways and hills punish thin soles. Add sunglasses, a refillable water bottle and a small day bag for market stops.

March is cooler and quieter, with lower prices and changeable weather. May is the better month overall: warmer, greener, but with long weekends (1 May, 8 May, Ascension) that fill trains. June brings long days and the start of high-season prices.
