Lyndhurst
Base here 1–2 nights to walk the New Forest; day-trippers should arrive before 10:00 in summer or the one-way system queues.
Lyndhurst is a village of about 3,000 people in the New Forest, the meeting point of the A35 and A337 and the forest's administrative centre. It has no railway station of its own, so most visitors come by bus, coach or car, and the village works as a base for walking, cycling and forest villages rather than as a sightseeing stop in itself. One night covers the village; two nights let you walk or ride into the forest without rushing.

Get around
The village is small enough to walk, but the one-way system turns the main roads into a loop and summer traffic queues from all directions. Buses run frequently from Southampton and Lymington; there are also two daily National Express coaches from London Victoria. Ashurst New Forest station is about 5 km (3.1 mi) away, Brockenhurst about 6 km (3.7 mi). The New Forest Tour open-top bus runs in summer and starts and finishes in Lyndhurst. The village is small enough to walk, but the one-way system turns the main roads into a loop and summer traffic queues from all directions. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer traffic through the village can queue badly; arrive early or park outside and walk in.
- Forest animals roam free: drive slowly, especially at dusk, and do not feed or approach the ponies.
- Lyndhurst has no railway station; plan the bus, coach or a taxi from Ashurst or Brockenhurst.
- Some buildings, including Glasshayes House, are not open to the public; check before making a special trip.
A low-crime village; the real risks are summer traffic, free-roaming ponies and deer on the roads, and getting caught out by a lack of late buses.
