Lymington is a small sailing port on the Solent, on the edge of the New Forest and a 40-minute ferry hop from Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. The town itself is a half-day of quay, Georgian streets and salt-marsh bird reserves; the rest of a stay is the forest, the coast path and the ferry. Two nights is the useful shape, three if you want a full day on the island.

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Two stations: Lymington Town for the centre, Lymington Pier for the ferry. Buses run to Southampton (Bluestar 6, about 1 h 20 min) and Bournemouth (Morebus X1/X2, about 1 h 50 min); an Explorer day ticket covers both operators.
