Lyme Regis
Stay 1–2 nights: the Cobb, the fossil beach and the Town Mill fill a day, and the town is small enough to walk end to end in 20 minutes.
Lyme Regis is a small Dorset seaside town on the Jurassic Coast, built around a harbour wall called the Cobb and a beach where fossils wash out of the cliffs. It has no train station: you arrive by bus from Axminster, about 5.5 miles away. One night covers the town; two nights let you walk the coast path or hunt fossils properly. Most visitors come May to September, and the town is quiet outside school holidays.

Get around
Walk. The centre, the beach and the Cobb are within 20 minutes on foot, though the streets are steep in places. A town bus runs on some routes; check locally. Buses X51 and X53 run from Axminster station; the X51 continues to Dorchester and the X53 to Weymouth, and both serve Lyme Regis — check the current timetable and stops before you travel. Driving in and parking out of season is easier than in August.
