Luray
Half a day for the caverns, or one night if you want to hike Shenandoah trails and eat a slow dinner. Skip it as a base — Front Royal or Harrisonburg work better for longer stays.
Luray is a small Shenandoah Valley town built around one big draw: Luray Caverns, the largest show caves in the eastern US. The historic main street has a few antique shops and diners, but the real reason to stop is underground. Most visitors come as a day trip from Washington DC (90 min) or as a quick detour off I-81.
