Go only as a Semeru or south-coast staging town: 1–2 nights, own wheels, dry-season window Jun–Sep. No train, no beach scene.
Lumajang is a regency town in East Java, not a resort. It sits between the Semeru side of Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park and the southern coast, with no active railway station and no tourist strip. Travellers come for volcano access, the Selokambang spring pools and a low-cost, working-Indonesian town. If you want a beach or a walkable old town, skip it and use Malang or Probolinggo instead.

- Wet-season landslides and washed-out roads are common Dec–Mar on the Semeru slopes.
- Scooter rental without an international permit and helmet is a police and insurance problem.
- Mountain nights on the Semeru slopes drop to about 5°C: bring a jacket.
Low street-crime risk; the real hazards are volcano activity, wet-season landslides, scooter crashes and long unlit rural roads at night. Carry cash, as cards fail outside the big shops.
