Ludwigsburg
Give Ludwigsburg one full day from Stuttgart, or one night if you want the palace and gardens without rushing the last S-Bahn back.
Ludwigsburg is a baroque planned town 20 minutes north of Stuttgart by S-Bahn, built around one enormous palace. The reason to come is the Residenzschloss and its gardens: over 400 rooms, several museums inside, and the Blühendes Barock garden show from mid-March to early October. The old town is small and walkable, so a day covers the core; a night lets you add Favorite or Monrepos without watching the clock.

Get around
The centre is flat and small: palace, gardens, Marktplatz and the main shopping streets are all within a 15-minute walk. VVS S-Bahn lines S4 and S5 link the station to Stuttgart, and VVS tickets are also valid on local buses. Buses cover the outer districts and Monrepos; a bike is fine for the Neckar riverside. After midnight, public transport thins out badly: on weekends only a few night buses run, so plan the last S-Bahn or a taxi.
