Luang Prabang is a dawn-and-dusk town: temples and the morning market before 10:00, a long lunch out of the heat, the river or the night market after 17:00 — and be inside before the guesthouse door locks.

The old town sits on a small peninsula between the Mekong and the Nam Khan, so everything is a walk. The trips that go wrong are the ones that arrive late: few flights land after dark, the town goes quiet from about 23:00, and many small guesthouses lock. Four walking clusters cover a first visit; Kuang Si and the Pak Ou caves are trips away from one kept bed.

Luang Prabang International Airport (LPQ)
LPQ to the old town: one tuk-tuk, taxi or hotel car, 15–35 minutes — the risk is not the ride but a landing after dark and a guesthouse door that locks around 23:00.

Get around

Walk inside the peninsula; tuk-tuk for the airport, the railway station and the day trips.

Passes
No pass. Agree the tuk-tuk fare before you get in; fixed-price boards exist at some stands.
Late at night
No city rail; the Laos–China railway station is about 10 km out of town and needs a car or minivan.

Walk-in breakfast at market stalls: noodles, sticky rice and coffee; go early, they thin out by mid-morning.

Quieter nights on the east side, near Wat Xieng Thong; a longer walk to the night market and a car ride for the airport bags.
Sisavangvong Road (old-town core)
First-timers: everything is a short walk, but pick a hotel with a car-reachable door and ask about night access — not a guesthouse that locks early.

Language

Lao is tonal and written in its own script, close to Thai; Isan Thai speakers understand it. English is common in Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng tourist trades; French signs and older speakers survive.

  • WhatsApp and WeChat for businesses; LINE is less common than in Thailand.

  • Temples: Covered shoulders and knees, shoes off; avoid: Pointing feet at images; women touching monks
  • Keeping calm: Stay relaxed; 'bor pen nyang'; avoid: Anger in public
  • Baci ceremony: Keep the white strings on your wrist for three days; avoid: Cutting them off
  • Head and feet: Keep feet down; avoid: Touching heads

Red lines

  • Temples: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off inside, do not point feet at Buddha images.
  • Alms-giving: no flash, no touching monks, no following them along the street.
  • Do not buy or give money to children who sell things or beg at temples.

  • Fake e-visa sites: Only laoevisa.gov.la.
  • Scooter damage claims: Photograph the bike, keep your passport, pay the deposit in cash instead.
  • Border 'overtime' and stamp fees: Small posted fees are real; ask for a receipt for anything else.
  • Alms-giving kits sold on the street: Street sticky rice is often stale; buy at the morning market or skip the offering.
  • Train ticket touts: Buy on the LCR app or at the station; resellers charge double.
