Louisville
Give Louisville 2 nights: one for Churchill Downs or a museum, one for the Highlands and Old Louisville. Add a third only for bourbon day trips.
Louisville is Kentucky's largest city, set on the Ohio River at the meeting point of Southern and Midwestern habits. The Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May is the headline, but Churchill Downs, the Muhammad Ali Center, the bourbon trail and the Victorian streets of Old Louisville fill a year-round weekend. Downtown, Old Louisville, the Highlands and Frankfort Avenue are walkable; almost everything else needs a car.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat and humidity: daytime highs above 32°C are common in Jul–Aug, with violent afternoon thunderstorms.
- Ohio Valley pollen counts are among the highest in the US; allergy sufferers should avoid late spring and early summer.
- Do not arrive at the Greyhound depot on W. Muhammad Ali Blvd late at night; take a taxi or get picked up.
- Derby week (late Apr–early May) sends hotel prices up sharply and fills rooms; book months ahead or avoid it.
- The Muhammad Ali boyhood home is closed to the public; the Ali Center downtown is the museum to visit.
- Tolled river crossings are all-electronic: renters without a transponder get a bill mailed to the registered owner.
Louisville is a generally safe mid-sized city; downtown, Old Louisville and the Highlands are fine on foot in daylight. Use normal city sense after dark, avoid the area around the Greyhound depot late at night, and drive or take a taxi if you are unsure.
