Los Mochis
Stay one night before or after the El Chepe train to Copper Canyon; the city itself is a transport hub, not a sightseeing base.
Los Mochis is an agricultural city of about 300,000 people in northern Sinaloa, on the coastal plain inland from Topolobampo. Almost every visitor is here for one reason: it is the western terminus of the El Chepe railway into Copper Canyon, and the closest airport and bus hub to the canyon's start. The city has a small historic centre, a good market and a winter baseball team, but no beach and few sights. Plan one night, ride the train, move on.

Get around
Taxis are the main way to move; they are plentiful and cheap, and there is no metro or useful city bus network for visitors. The train station and the airport are both a short taxi ride from Centro. Renting a car is possible but driving in Sinaloa carries real risk; use taxis and buses instead.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet; avoid: Photos during mass
- Dining: Say 'provecho' to other diners when leaving; avoid: Rushing the waiter
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat is dangerous: 40 °C days with high humidity in Jul–Sep.
- August and September bring storms and occasional hurricanes.
- Sinaloa has a serious security situation in parts of the state; check current advisories before travelling and keep to the city and the tourist corridor.
- The city has no central bus station — each company runs its own terminal, so confirm which one your ticket leaves from.
- El Chepe runs on limited days: check the current timetable before booking anything else.
Los Mochis itself is a working city and the tourist areas are calm, but Sinaloa has a serious security situation in parts of the state: check current advisories, travel by day, use taxis at night and avoid isolated roads.
