Los Lunas
Skip Los Lunas as a base. Use it as a 2–3 h stop off I-25 between Albuquerque and Belen, or a cheap motel night if Albuquerque is full.
Los Lunas is a Rio Grande valley town of about 15,000–17,000 people, 20 miles (32 km) south of Albuquerque and the seat of Valencia County. It has one small museum, a historic district, a riverside park and a Rail Runner commuter stop, but no cluster of sights. Travellers who want New Mexico's adobe towns, pueblos and high desert go to Albuquerque, Santa Fe or Belen instead; Los Lunas works as a half-day on the way past, or a cheaper bed for an Albuquerque trip.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: I-25 runs north–south west of town and NM 314 and NM 6 (Main Street) meet at the centre. The New Mexico Rail Runner Express connects Los Lunas to Albuquerque, Belen and Santa Fe, but service is limited and the station sits about half a mile south of the NM 314/Main Street junction. Local buses are minimal; expect to walk short distances only.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances between sights are car distances, not walk distances: the museum, the historic district and the river are not one stroll.
- Summer afternoons regularly pass 35 °C; carry water and do outdoor stops before 11:00.
- Rail Runner runs limited daily service: check the timetable before you plan a train-based day.
- Motel rates spike when Albuquerque hosts big events; book ahead or you will pay walk-up rates.
A low-crime suburban town; the real risks are summer heat, long unlit stretches between sights and interstate traffic if you walk near the Main Street/I-25 junction. Standard US caution applies after dark.
