Los Angeles public transport: tickets, passes and apps

Match the ticket to how many times a day you will actually board. A single Metro ride is US$1.75 and includes two hours of transfers on the same TAP tap, so a short errand costs one fare. Two or more separate journeys in a day and the US$5 1-day pass wins. A week of daily riding makes the US$18 7-day pass the cheapest option.

If you are in Los Angeles for two or three days and mostly walking, eating and using ride-hailing, skip the pass and pay per ride. If your plan is Hollywood, Downtown, Santa Monica and Universal on consecutive days, buy the pass on day one.

Visitors without a TAP card can tap a contactless bank card or phone on Metro rail gates and bus readers. That is the fastest start, but passes are cheaper for heavy use and only load onto TAP.

TAP is the stored-value card for LA Metro and most surrounding bus agencies. Buy one at a station ticket machine, a Metro Customer Center or a participating retailer, then load a pass or cash value at the same machine or in the TAP app. Keep the card; it is reusable and reloadable.

Contactless bank cards and phones work as tap-to-ride on Metro rail and buses. This is convenient but does not give you the pass discount, and some suburban bus agencies still run their own fareboxes, so a TAP card is the safer single tool across the county.

Metro's own app shows schedules, real-time arrivals and lets you manage a TAP card. Ride-hailing apps are the practical fallback for late nights, the hills and anywhere the rail does not reach.

Metro fares are flat across the system rather than zoned, which makes the pass simple: one price covers the rail lines and Metro buses from Long Beach to the San Fernando Valley. Some municipal operators that accept TAP, such as Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus and Culver CityBus, may charge their own base fare — check before boarding.

The network is good along the rail corridors: Downtown to Hollywood, Santa Monica via the E Line, Long Beach via the A Line, Pasadena via the A Line, and LAX via the C and K lines. It is thin in the Santa Monica Mountains, the beach canyons, Beverly Hills and much of the Valley, where buses are slow and infrequent. Plan on ride-hailing for those legs.

Traffic is the reason to use rail where it exists: a Downtown to Santa Monica trip on the E Line takes roughly 50 minutes regardless of the freeway, while the same drive can take 40 minutes or 90.

LAX has no rail station on the terminal loop. The free shuttle to the Metro C and K line connector, or the LAX FlyAway bus to Union Station and other hubs, are the two transit options. The FlyAway to Union Station costs about US$9.75 one way and takes 30–60 minutes depending on traffic; from Union Station you can transfer to Metro rail with a TAP card.

The Metro connector route is cheaper but slower with luggage: shuttle, then rail, then often a second transfer. If you land late or carry a lot of bags, a ride-hailing trip to a central hotel runs roughly US$40–90 plus tip and is the default choice for most visitors.

If you plan to explore beyond the city — the coast, the desert, the parks — pick up a car at the airport instead. Public transport in Los Angeles works for a city break, not for a California road trip.

Load the pass before you need it. Station machines can have queues at peak times, and not every bus stop sells TAP. Keep a small stored-value balance on the card as a backup for suburban buses that do not take contactless bank cards.

Ride the rail in daylight when you can and use the front carriage at night. Metro runs frequent security and ambassador patrols, but some stations and late-night buses feel empty; ride-hailing after about 22:00 is a common local habit.

Do not buy a pass for a day you will spend at the beach or in the hills. The pass only pays off on days with three or more boardings, and Los Angeles sightseeing is often one long trip out and one back.
