Stay 3 nights: walk the malecón and mission in a morning, then give a full day each to the islands and to San Javier. Skip it if you want nightlife.
Loreto is a small desert-coast town on the Sea of Cortez, the first Spanish settlement on the California peninsula and the start of the old mission road. It is a base, not a resort strip: the sea, the islands and the mountain mission are the reasons to come. Three nights covers the town, a boat day and San Javier without rushing; two nights is the minimum if you only want the water.

Get around
The centre is walkable and bicycles work well. Taxis cover the airport and Nopolo; there is no public bus to the airport. For San Javier, the islands and the beaches you book a tour or drive Federal Highway 1.

Scams and watch-outs

- Highway 1 is two lanes and passes through towns as the main street; drive it in daylight and watch for livestock and trucks.
- Boat and fishing trips depend on wind and swell: confirm the day before and keep a spare morning.
- Cash is useful in the centre and required at some RV parks; carry small notes.
Loreto is a small, calm town and the usual tourist areas are low-risk. The real hazards are heat, sun and dehydration, rough water on boat days, and unlit highway shoulders at night: lock the car, keep valuables out of sight and drive Highway 1 in daylight.
