Lorain is a Lake Erie steel-and-shipbuilding town of about 64,000, 30 miles west of Cleveland, at the mouth of the Black River. Its draw is the waterfront — beaches, the breakwater light, kayak and walleye charters — plus a restored 1928 movie palace. Hotels are thin, so most travellers sleep in Amherst, Avon or Cleveland and drive in for a half or full day.

A car is the practical choice: sights stretch along Route 6 (Erie Avenue) and Route 57 (Broadway). Lorain County Transit runs local buses and a link from Cleveland Hopkins airport and Elyria. Downtown is walkable around Broadway and Black River Landing; the beaches and the lighthouse are not.
