London nightlife: best areas, bars and safety tips

London nightlife is not one district but a set of them, each with a different job. Pick by what you want from the evening, then plan the ride home before the last Tube.

Soho and Covent Garden suit a first night: dense bars, short walks between them, and several Tube lines within ten minutes. Shoreditch and Hoxton are later and louder, with bars that stay open past pub hours. Camden is for live music and a younger crowd. The South Bank and Bankside are for a slower drink with river views. Clapham, Brixton and Peckham are where many Londoners actually go out, cheaper than the centre and busy at weekends.

Pub hours are the fixed point of a London evening: most close around 23:00, some at 22:30 on Sundays, and a few hold later licences. Clubs usually open 22:00–23:00 and close between 03:00 and 06:00. Many venues charge more at the door than online, and some sell out on Fridays and Saturdays.

Expect to pay £6–7.50 for a pint in central London and £5–6.50 further out. Cocktails run £12–16 centrally. A service charge of 10–12.5% is often added to bar tabs and food; tipping is not expected in pubs. Check the venue's own site for door times and entry prices, which change often.

The Tube is the fastest way in and out, but it stops early. Last trains leave central London around 00:30, with later services on some lines on Friday and Saturday nights. Check the day's timetable before you go out, because engineering works close lines at weekends.

After the last Tube, night buses run all night across the city and cost the same contactless fare as daytime travel. Black cabs and ride-hailing apps work but surge on weekend nights; a cross-central cab can cost £25–45 (2026 estimate). Walking between Soho, Covent Garden and the South Bank is often quicker than waiting for a bus.

Drink prices are highest in the centre and lowest in outer neighbourhoods, so a night in Brixton or Peckham costs noticeably less than one in Soho. Many pubs serve food until 21:00–22:00, which makes an early dinner and a later bar an easy plan.

Carry photo ID: venues can ask if you look under 25, and a passport is the safest document for visitors. Queues build after 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, so arrive earlier or book ahead. London is generally safe at night in busy areas, but keep to lit streets, watch your phone at closing time and use licensed taxis or apps rather than unmarked cars.

Late spring to early autumn is the busiest and warmest period, with longer evenings and outdoor spaces open. December brings Christmas crowds and higher prices. January and February are the quietest months, with shorter queues and easier bookings.

Weeknights are calmer and often cheaper; weekends are when clubs and late bars are at their fullest. If a specific gig or club night matters to you, check its date first and build the trip around it, since one-off events sell out weeks ahead.
