Lomé

Lomé is a morning-and-dusk city: do the market and the cathedral before 11:00, rest at midday, take a car after dark, and carry small CFA notes; the airport is 15 minutes from the centre.

Lomé sits on the coast next to the Ghana border. The centre is compact and walkable by day, but heat, motorbike taxis (zémidjans) and traffic are constant and cards are accepted at few places. Four walking areas cover a first visit; Lake Togo, Togoville and the hills at Kpalimé are separate trips by car.

No pass. Agree the taxi fare before you get in; a hired car by the hour is cheaper for a tour.

Language

French is the language of administration and signs. Ewe and Mina dominate the south, Kabiyè and Tem the north. Near the Ghana border and in Lomé's markets many people speak some English.

  • Ewe: 'Akpé' (thank you), 'Ŋdi' (good morning).
  • 'Yovo' means white foreigner; children call it out cheerfully.

  • Elders and chiefs: Greet first; bring a small gift when visiting a village chief; avoid: Sitting before being invited

Red lines

  • Do not photograph police, soldiers, government buildings or the border.
  • Ask before photographing people, market traders and vodun ceremonies.
  • Dress modestly in the market and the cathedral.

Scams (Togo page)

  • Fake e-visa and arrival-form sites: Use voyage.gouv.tg only; the arrival form is free.
  • Border 'officials' and money changers: Only uniformed staff inside the posts; change small amounts.
  • Fetish-market 'charms' and fees: Agree the entry and photo fee first; decline pricey charms.
  • Beach hustlers: Keep valuables at the hotel; avoid the beach at night.
  • Overpriced pirogue crossings: Ask your hotel for the going rate.
