Loma Plata
Give Loma Plata one full day plus one night: the Mennonite museum and Trébol plant tour are the reason to come, and buses onward are few.
Loma Plata is one of the three Mennonite colonies of the central Chaco, 440 km northwest of Asunción and 24 km off the Transchaco Highway. It is a working cooperative town, not a resort: the museum, the dairy plant and the Chaco War sites nearby are the draw, and almost everything sits on Avenida Central. Come as a stop between Asunción and Filadelfia, or as a base for the northern Chaco.

Avenida Central is the main street and almost every sight, shop and restaurant is on it between the two roundabouts — walkable. Out-of-town sites (Campo Esperanza, Pozo Azul, Punta Riel, Isla Poí) are 25–80 km (16–50 mi) away on dirt or gravel roads with no public transport: you need a car, or a guided visit arranged through the tourist office. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, or a cheek kiss among women and friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días'
- Tereré circle: Say thank you when you want to stop; avoid: Wiping the straw
- Language: Try a Guaraní word (aguyje = thanks); avoid: Calling Guaraní a dialect
- Time: Expect relaxed punctuality (hora paraguaya); avoid: Getting visibly impatient
Scams and watch-outs
- Businesses close 12:00–14:00 and on Saturday afternoons and Sundays; plan meals and errands around that.
- Out-of-town sites are on unpaved roads: after rain they can be impassable without a 4x4 — check locally before setting out.
- Buses to Asunción run about three times a day and fill up; buy your ticket a day ahead at the NASA office.
- Summer heat is serious: carry water, and do not walk the out-of-town sites at midday.
- Little English is spoken outside the tourist office and hotels; Spanish or German gets you further.
Loma Plata is a small, orderly cooperative town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are the heat, long empty drives on unpaved roads, and few buses: keep water, fuel and a charged phone.
