Lockerbie
Give Lockerbie half a day if you are passing on the A74(M) or the Glasgow–Carlisle line; stay one night only if you want the memorial sites and Lochmaben Castle.
Lockerbie is a small planned town in Dumfries and Galloway, on the main road and railway between Carlisle and Glasgow, with a population of about 4,200. Most travellers know the name from the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing of 21 December 1988, and the town's memorial sites are the main reason to stop. Everything else — a ruined castle, a curling pond reserve, an ice rink — fits around that in a few hours.

Get around
The town centre is walkable, including the mile out to Dryfesdale Cemetery on Dumfries Road, which has a sidewalk. Anything further — Lochmaben, Hallmuir, Ecclefechan, Wallace's House — needs a car, bike or taxi. Lockerbie railway station is in the centre with step-free access to both platforms.
