Lochgilphead

Base here 1–2 nights only if you want Kilmartin Glen and the Crinan Canal; otherwise pass through on the A83 between Inveraray and Tarbert.

Lochgilphead is a small Argyll and Bute town at the head of Loch Gilp, an inlet of Loch Fyne, and the area's administrative centre. The town itself is plain, but it sits within 20 minutes of Kilmartin Glen's Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments, the Crinan Canal towpath and the Tayvallich peninsula. Most travellers use it as a single-night stop on the road to Kintyre or the islands, or as a base for Kilmartin.

Get around

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread over 15–30 km of single-track and A-road. Without one, West Coast bus 425/426 reaches Tayvallich (Mon–Fri), bus 423/23 links Oban via Kilmartin, and bus 448 runs to Tarbert and Kennacraig. Citylink 926 stops on Lochnell Street for Glasgow, Inveraray, Tarbert and Campbeltown.

Sleep

Lochgilphead town centre
Lochnell Street (A83) and side streets: B&Bs, the Co-op, buses stop on the main road. Best for one night without a car.
Crinan
By the canal basin, 10–15 min drive west. Quieter, one hotel, walks from the door.
Kilmartin
Village next to the museum and the glen monuments, about 15 min north. Best if the megaliths are the reason you came.
Tayvallich
On the peninsula south, about 30 min. Seafood inn and the Jura foot ferry; needs a car or the weekday bus.

  • The A83 at Rest and Be Thankful is prone to landslides and rockfalls; engineering work continues in 2025–26 with convoy or closure delays. Check Traffic Scotland before driving.
  • Fuel and food options thin out fast outside the town; fill up and buy supplies in Lochgilphead.
  • Mobile coverage is 4G in town but patchy on the approach roads; no 5G here.
  • Midges are heavy near water and woodland from June to August, especially at dusk.
  • Single-track roads: use passing places, and let faster traffic past.

Very low crime; the real risks are single-track roads, weather that turns fast, and midges. Tell someone your route if walking in the hills, and carry a waterproof.
