Llantwit Major
Llanilltud Fawr
Go for one night, or a half-day from Cardiff or Bridgend: the church and Roman villa take 2–3 hours, then the coast path.
Llantwit Major is a small Vale of Glamorgan town, 9,500 people, 15 miles west of Cardiff and a few miles from Cardiff Airport at Rhoose. Its draw is early-Christian history: St Illtyd's Church holds one of Britain's oldest colleges, and a Roman villa sits just outside town. The Glamorgan Heritage Coast and the Wales Coast Path are within walking distance. Most travellers see it as a half-day or one night between Cardiff and the coast.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- St Donat's Castle is a school (Atlantic College) and is not open as a normal visitor attraction: check open days before you go.
- The Roman villa and some church access depend on season and volunteers: check before travelling.
- The coast between Gileston and Aberthaw has a power station and stony beaches; not a swimming beach.
- Rural buses are infrequent, especially on Sundays: check the last service back.
A quiet, low-crime small town. The real risks are weather on the coast path, uneven stony beaches and infrequent rural buses: carry a charged phone and check the last service.
