Llansteffan
Go for a half-day: castle ruin on the ridge, beach below, one pub lunch. Sleep here only if you want a quiet coast base for 1–2 nights.
Llansteffan is a small Carmarthenshire village of about 890 people at the mouth of the Towy, 8 miles (13 km) south of Carmarthen on the B4312. The reason to come is the Norman castle on the headland above the beach, plus the Wales Coast Path running through. It is a half-day stop, not a destination in itself; most travellers pair it with Carmarthen, Laugharne or Kidwelly. A car makes it easy; the 227 bus from Carmarthen works if you accept a few daily runs.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Castle is a ruin on a steep, uneven headland: wear grippy shoes and keep children back from the edges.
- The beach is estuary sand with mud and fast-moving tides: check tide times and do not walk far out.
- Bus 227 runs a limited daily timetable; check the last return to Carmarthen before you set out.
- Mobile signal is patchy in the village and on the coast path.
Very low crime; the real risks are the tide, wet slate paths on the castle headland and narrow lanes without pavements. Walk facing traffic on the B4312.
