Llanrwst
Base here 1–2 nights if you want Snowdonia's edge without Betws-y-Coed prices; skip as a day trip from Llandudno — the train eats 1 h each way.
Llanrwst is a small market town of about 3,100 people on the Conwy Valley Line, under a mile from the Snowdonia National Park boundary and 4 miles south of Betws-y-Coed. It has a 15th-century church with a stone coffin linked to Llywelyn the Great, a Tudor manor house at Gwydir, and a square with a handful of independent shops. Most travellers use it as a quieter, cheaper bed for Snowdonia and the Conwy Valley rather than as a sightseeing destination in itself.

Get around
The town centre is small enough to walk in 10 minutes. Two stations on the Conwy Valley Line (Llanrwst and North Llanrwst) link Llandudno Junction and Blaenau Ffestiniog; trains are infrequent, so check times before planning a day out. A car is the practical way to reach Gwydir Castle, Betws-y-Coed and the park.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Conwy Valley Line trains are infrequent and can be replaced by buses after flooding; check before you travel.
- Many shops and cafés close early and some shut on Sundays; plan food before 17:00.
- Mobile signal is patchy in the valley; download maps and tickets in advance.
- Riverside and mountain paths get slippery after rain; wear shoes with grip.
Llanrwst is a low-crime small town; the real risks are wet, slippery paths, fast A470 traffic and infrequent trains that can leave you stranded after dark.
