Llanidloes
One night is enough for Llanidloes itself; base here 2 nights only if you want Clywedog and the lead-mine ruins without a car shuffle.
Llanidloes is a small mid-Wales market town of about 2,800 people on the A470, with a timber-framed Old Market Hall in the middle of the street and the Clywedog reservoir dam up the valley. Llanidloes has no railway station; the nearest is Caersws, 11 km away on the Aberystwyth–Birmingham line via Shrewsbury. It works as a quiet one-night stop between Newtown and Machynlleth, or as a two-night base if you have a car and want the reservoir road and the old lead mine.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No railway station: Caersws is 11 km away, so plan the taxi or bus link before you book.
- Rural bus frequencies are low and Sunday services are minimal: check the current timetable.
- Single-track lanes around Clywedog with passing places; drive slowly and expect sheep.
- Mobile signal is patchy in the valleys; download offline maps before you leave Newtown.
Very low crime; the real risks are rural driving on single-track lanes, fast-changing weather on the hills and long waits if you miss the last bus.
