Llangefni
Skip as a base unless you have a car: one night, or a 2-hour stop for Oriel Ynys Môn and lunch, then sleep on the coast.
Llangefni is Anglesey's county town and sits in the middle of the island, about 7 miles from the coast in every direction. It is a working Welsh-speaking town with a market, a gallery and a few pubs rather than a resort. Almost everything visitors come to Anglesey for — beaches, coast path, South Stack — is a drive away, so Llangefni works as a cheap, central bed and a wet-day stop, not as a holiday in itself.

Get around
The town itself is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Everything else on Anglesey needs a car, a bike or a bus: the A55 is about 2 miles south, buses run to Bangor, Caernarfon and Holyhead, and the island's beaches are 15–25 minutes by car. Cycling on the lanes is good; the main roads are fast and narrow-shouldered.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Without a car you are stuck: buses are infrequent in the evening and on Sundays.
- Many Anglesey cafés, attractions and campsites close or cut hours from November to March.
- Mobile signal and 4G are patchy in the lanes and on the coast path; download offline maps.
- Single-track lanes have passing places: pull in, don't reverse at speed.
Llangefni is a small, quiet town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are rural: fast A-roads with no pavement, tide and currents on the beaches, and cliff edges on the coast path.
