Llanberis
Base here 2 nights to climb Snowdon or ride the railway; skip it if you have no mountain plan — the village is small and the weather decides everything.
Llanberis sits at the foot of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), the highest peak in Wales, on the shore of Llyn Padarn. It is the main base for the mountain: the Snowdon Mountain Railway starts here, the Llanberis Path leaves from the village, and the slate-quarry landscape around it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Two nights covers a summit day plus the lake and quarry walks; one night works only if the forecast is clear and you start early.

Get around
On foot. The village is small and the Llanberis Path starts near the centre. The Llanberis Lake Railway and Padarn Country Park are a short walk west. Buses S1 (Caernarfon, Betws-y-Coed) and S2 (Bangor) stop in the village; a taxi from Bangor station is about £20.
