Ljubljana
Ljubljana is a one-and-a-half-day city: the car-free Old Town and the river in the morning, the castle after lunch, Tivoli Park in the evening — and use it as a base for Bled and the caves.
Ljubljana is small: the Old Town, the castle hill and Tivoli Park sit within about 2 km, and most of the centre is closed to cars. The trips that go wrong are the ones that try to drive into the pedestrian zone, book a late dinner on a Sunday when half the kitchens are closed, or treat Bled and Postojna as easy half-days. Four walking clusters cover a first visit; the lakes and the caves are trips away from one kept bed.

Walk inside the centre; bus or taxi to the railway station, the castle funicular's far side and the airport.
