Livingstonia
Half a day to see the mission town and Manchewe Falls, or one night for the plateau views and sunset over Lake Malawi. Not a base — pass through on the northern lakeshore route.
Livingstonia is a historic mission town perched on the Nyika escarpment, 900 m above Lake Malawi. The main draw is the view: a 360° panorama from Chombe Plateau that takes in the lake, Nyika and Tanzania. The town itself is quiet — a stone house, a cairn, a waterfall — and most travellers stop for a few hours between Mzuzu and the lake or spend one night at the eco-lodge below town.

Scams and watch-outs
- The road from Chitimba up to Livingstonia is steep, narrow and slippery in rain — avoid driving it yourself in a 2WD.
- Manchewe Falls trail can be muddy; wear sturdy shoes and ask locally about the cave access.
- No ATM in Livingstonia — bring enough kwacha from Mzuzu or Chitimba.
- Mobile reception is patchy; download maps and info before you arrive.
Livingstonia is safe for tourists. The main risks are the steep access road (especially in rain) and the waterfall trail after wet weather. Keep valuables out of sight in town.
