  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Baltic states ↗Treat the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian borders with Russia and Belarus as closed to your plans: crossings are restricted, change within hours, and sit under advisories on the far side.
  • Baltic states ↗Book open-jaw flights (into Tallinn or Vilnius, out of the other) so the line runs one way; Riga is the biggest airport if you need a single hub.
  • Baltic states ↗Midsummer (23–24 June) is the biggest holiday in all three countries: cities empty, many businesses close and island and coast transport sells out.
  • Lithuania ↗Lithuania is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Lithuanian sources for your passport.
  • Lithuania ↗Borders with Belarus and the Russian Kaliningrad region are not routes for casual travel; check your government's advice first.
  • Lithuania ↗The Curonian Spit is a protected national park: cars pay an entry fee, and the Russian half of the spit is a separate border.

Lithuania Minor (Mažoji Lietuva) is the country's only coast: a port city, a 98 km sand spit and a wetland river delta. It was Prussian, German-speaking territory until 1945, and most of its historic core — Königsberg — is now in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, so what remains in Lithuania is a thin western strip. Come for the spit and the sea; two to four nights is enough, and a car makes the difference between seeing the delta and skipping it.

Night sequences

2 nights
Klaipėda 1 + Nida 1 (summer only; out of season do the spit as a day trip)
4 nights
Klaipėda 2 + Nida 2, with a Šilutė and delta day
3 nights
Klaipėda 2 + Juodkrantė or Nida day trip + Šilutė day trip
  • Klaipėda to Nida looks short on the map but is a ferry plus a spit bus — allow two hours each way.
  • The spit is a protected landscape: stay on marked paths on the dunes, and no fires outside designated spots.
  • The Nemunas delta is wetland: mosquitoes June to August, and few services outside Šilutė.

Day-trips door to door

ToFromDoor-to-door p50Last returnNote
NidaKlaipėda120 minunknownFerry to Smiltynė then bus down the spit; check the last bus before a late return.
JuodkrantėKlaipėda75 minunknownSame ferry plus a short bus or bike ride; Hill of Witches is a 15-minute walk from the village.
ŠilutėKlaipėda70 minunknownFour trains a day, about an hour; onward to the Nemunas delta needs a car or a local bus.

Bags between cities

No luggage-forwarding habit here; carry bags on the ferry to the spit, or leave them at a Klaipėda hotel for a one-night Nida stay.

Coast and Curonian Spit
Baltic coast: sea breezes keep summer cooler than inland, but rain is frequent year-round. July–August is the only reliably warm swimming window; the sea stays cold in June.
Nemunas delta and inland
Similar temperatures, more standing water and mosquitoes in summer; spring floods can close minor delta roads.

Best months are June to August, and also the crowd peak on the spit: Nida beds and the car ferry queue fill in July. May and September are quieter and cheaper, with cooler water.

Regional passes

Verdict first

Curonian Spit ecological fee

buy

Required at the checkpoint for vehicles, and a smaller per-person fee for pedestrians and cyclists; keep the ticket for the return.

Klaipėda city transport tickets

buy

Buy single tickets on board or in the app; the old town, ferry and bus station are walkable, so most visitors need few.

Rental car

buy

The one purchase that opens the region: the Nemunas delta and lagoon villages are impractical without it. Book from your arrival airport.
