Lithgow

Give Lithgow one night if you want the Zig Zag Railway or the Glow Worm Tunnel; skip the car-dependent sights if you have no car — the train and Main Street work without one.

Lithgow is a former coal and small-arms town at the western edge of the Blue Mountains, about 3 h by train from Sydney Central and roughly 1 h 45 min by car. The town itself is a short Main Street with pubs and a rail station; the reasons to come are the Zig Zag heritage railway, the Glow Worm Tunnel in Wollemi National Park and the old blast furnace. Almost everything beyond Main Street needs a car.

Get around

The station sits between Main Street (pedestrian exit) and Railway Parade (parking, buses, taxis). Pubs, cafés and the main shops are walkable from the Main Street exit. Local buses cover the suburbs but run infrequently. For the Glow Worm Tunnel, Lake Lyell, Newnes or the Lost City you need your own car; the tunnel road is about 30 km of graded dirt, 2WD-accessible in dry weather but rough.

  • Mount Victoria Pass has been reported closed for structural work: check the current status and use Darling Causeway from Mount Victoria if it is still shut.
  • The Glow Worm Tunnel road is unsealed and corrugated; check conditions after rain and carry water — the car park has long-drop toilets only.
  • Inside the tunnel keep torches off or aimed at the floor: light kills the glow and your night vision.
  • Winter nights drop near or below freezing; the highway can fog in.
  • Book Zig Zag Railway seats ahead — it runs on limited days, not daily.

A small, quiet country town; the real risks are the drive (kangaroos and fog at dusk on the Great Western Highway), unsealed roads after rain, and cold nights in winter. Main Street pubs are busy but orderly.
