Go for 2 nights if you are already crossing Kham by road: one afternoon for the monastery and old town, one full day for the grasslands. Skip as a first China trip.
Litang sits at about 4,000 m on the Kham grassland, the highest county town most travellers will sleep in on the Sichuan–Tibet route. It is a Tibetan town with a rebuilt Gelug monastery, a horse festival in summer and long views over open pasture. The altitude, not the sightseeing, is what decides your trip: most people need a night to acclimatise before going further west.

Get around
The centre is walkable in 20–30 minutes end to end. Taxis and shared vans cover the monastery, the stupa and the hot springs; agree the fare before you get in. Long-distance buses and hired minibuses leave from the bus station at the east end of town.

Scams and watch-outs
- Altitude about 4,000 m: sleep the first night low-effort, no alcohol, and treat headache with vomiting or breathlessness as a reason to descend.
- Autumn and winter rooms often have no heating beyond an electric blanket; ask before you pay.
- Photographs of the Dalai Lama are illegal and police presence is heavy; do not photograph police, checkpoints or monasteries without asking.
- Dust and smoke are constant in the dry months; a cloth mask is cheap and sold locally.
- Dogs bark through the night in much of the old town.
The main risk is altitude, not crime. Violent incidents are rare but political tension means a heavy police presence and rules on photographs: keep the camera down at checkpoints and monasteries.
