The pedestrian main street of Lisbon's Baixa: a straight, stone-paved street of shops and café terraces that runs through the grid rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, ending at a triumphal arch that opens onto the river square.
Getting there
Metro Terreiro do Paço (blue line) is by Praça do Comércio; Baixa-Chiado (blue and green lines) is two blocks west; Rossio (green line) is by the north end. Trams 15 and 25 stop at Praça do Comércio.

Car-free. Pedestrian street; only delivery and emergency vehicles use it, mostly in the early morning. Cross streets carry traffic and trams, so watch at each intersection.

Scams and traps
- Men quietly offering 'hashish' or 'cocaine': it is usually bay leaves or powder, and buying it is still illegal. Say no and keep walking.
- Terrace menus shown without prices, or bread, olives and cheese placed on the table that are charged if touched. Send back what you don't want.
Accessibility
- Flat and wide, the easiest walk in central Lisbon; the patterned stone paving is smooth but slippery when wet.
- The arch viewpoint is reached by an elevator plus a short spiral staircase (check).

- From the north end, look south for the classic view of the arch framing the street.
- From the arch viewpoint, you can see down the whole street and over Praça do Comércio to the river.
A line of history
After the 1755 earthquake and fire destroyed the lower town, the Marquis of Pombal had it rebuilt on a regular grid with Rua Augusta as its central axis; the triumphal arch at its end was completed in 1875.

Fine for a coffee and people-watching, but main courses on the terraces are pricier than on the parallel side streets.
