Lincoln, Nebraska
Lincoln
Give Lincoln one full day and one night: Capitol, Sheldon, Sunken Gardens and the Haymarket all sit within a 30-minute walk. Add a second night only for a Huskers game.
Lincoln is Nebraska's capital and second city, 95 km southwest of Omaha on I-80. It is a government-and-university town of about 291,000 people with a compact downtown: the Art Deco State Capitol, a free university art museum, the Sunken Gardens and the brick Haymarket district are all walkable from one hotel. Most travellers pass through on I-80 or stop for a Cornhuskers football weekend; a single unhurried day covers the core, and a car is only needed for the zoo, Pioneers Park or the quilt museum.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- StarTran buses stop running around 18:30 and there is no Sunday service: plan evenings on foot, by bike or by car.
- On Nebraska home football Saturdays (Memorial Stadium seats over 90,000) downtown hotels sell out and traffic jams: book months ahead or avoid the date.
- Winter brings ice and wind chills well below freezing; summer afternoons are hot and humid.
- Amtrak's California Zephyr calls at Lincoln around midnight westbound and about 03:30 eastbound: arrange a late check-in or a taxi in advance.
Lincoln is a low-risk city for visitors; the real issues are winter ice, summer heat and driving after a Haymarket night out. Downtown is fine on foot in the evening; use normal city sense after dark away from the centre.
