Limbaži
Give Limbaži half a day on a car route between Riga and the Estonian border; without a car, skip it — buses from Riga take 1.5 h each way.
Limbaži is a former Hanseatic town of about 7,000 people in northern Latvia, 17 km east of the Riga–Tallinn highway on the P11. Its castle was destroyed in 1602 and the railway is gone, so what remains is a compact grid of 19th- and 20th-century brick and wooden streets, two small museums and a lake. It works as a two- to three-hour stop on a drive, not as a base.

Get around
The centre is flat and walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. Buses from Riga run about 10 times a day (1.5 h); Cēsis and Valmiera have a few daily services each. A car makes the manors and the lake easy; on foot you are limited to the town.

A quiet small town and low-risk for visitors. The real issues are dark, unlit streets outside the centre in winter, ice on pavements, and deer or tractors on the P11 at night — drive with dipped headlights, which are required at all times in Latvia.
