Base in Limassol over Larnaca or Paphos if you want a working city with a marina and old town, not just a resort strip: it's the most central base for wine villages and the Kourion ruins, with 2–3 nights.
Limassol is the second-largest city of the Republic of Cyprus and its main commercial port. It has a seafront promenade lined with modern towers, a medieval castle and an old town of narrow streets and tavernas. Wine villages in the Troodos foothills and the Kourion archaeological site are both under an hour away by car.

Get around
Local buses cover the city but run infrequently outside peak hours; taxis are easy to find in the centre. A hire car is the practical choice for wine villages, the Troodos hills and Kourion, since intercity public transport is thin.

Language
Greek in the south and Turkish in the north, each with a strong Cypriot dialect. English is a legacy of British rule until 1960 and is spoken by most people you will deal with. Signs are bilingual Greek–English or Turkish–English.
- Place names differ by side: Kyrenia/Girne, Famagusta/Gazimağusa, Morphou/Güzelyurt. Maps may use either.
- Using northern place names in the south, or southern ones in the north, is noticed; neutral English names are safest.

Scams and watch-outs
- Cars drive on the left, and roundabouts can catch visitors from right-hand-drive countries off guard.
- Public transport between towns is limited and infrequent; don't rely on it for day trips without checking the timetable first.
- Beach hotels and restaurants are booked out in July and August; reserve well ahead.
- Summer sun is intense between noon and 4pm; carry water and sun protection for the ruins at Kourion.
Cyprus has low violent crime; the main risks for visitors are sun exposure, road habits different from home, and limited transport outside the resort towns.
