Lima

Lima is a lunch-and-cliff city: Miraflores and Barranco by day, the centre in one morning by car, and sun only from December to April.

Lima is a huge coastal city under a grey sky for half the year, with traffic that turns a 10 km ride into an hour. The trips that go wrong stack the historic centre, Barranco and Miraflores into one afternoon, or ride the airport road at rush hour. Four areas cover a first visit; base in Miraflores or Barranco and cross the city by app car, outside rush hours.

LIM to Miraflores: one ride-hailing car or official taxi, 60–100 minutes in traffic — the risk is not the ride but rush hour and a guesthouse door that locks.

Get around

Walk inside a district; ride-hailing car between districts.

Passes
No pass. Cars are cheap; check the fare in the app and plan for slow traffic.
Late at night
No rail line serves the tourist districts at night; app cars run late but expect surge prices.

    A small wooden bridge and the street below it, with steps to the sea: 30 minutes, after 16:00 when the light is better.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Handshake; one cheek kiss among acquaintances; avoid: Skipping greetings
  • Food pride: Ask about local dishes; avoid: Comparing pisco or ceviche unfavourably with Chile's
  • Photos: Ask and pay if asked; avoid: Photographing people without asking
  • Politics: Listen; avoid: Taking sides in protests

Red lines

  • Do not walk between districts at night, and avoid La Victoria and the streets around Parque Universitario after dark.
  • Ask before photographing people; many expect a small payment in the centre.
  • Do not accept a taxi that already carries a passenger.

Scams and watch-outs

  • Street taxis that name a high price or take a long route: use a ride-hailing app.
  • 'Helpful' strangers who offer a taxi at the airport: use the official desk or your app.
  • Distraction thefts and snatching near the historic centre and on busy Miraflores corners: keep phones and cameras out of sight.
  • Change short-changed with large notes: count your notes.
