Lilongwe

Lilongwe is a one-or-two-night gateway, not a sightseeing city: see the wildlife centre and the central market by day, be in your lodge before dark, and leave for the lake in the morning with a driver you have booked.

Lilongwe is spread out, with a market district, an Old Town, a government quarter and long roads between them; there is little to walk between and the airport is 25 km out. The trips that go wrong arrive at night without a booked car, try to walk between districts, or plan a same-day drive to the lake on a fuel-short day. Four small clusters cover a first visit by taxi; Lake Malawi is the trip that follows.

LLW to the Old Town: one lodge car or a booked taxi, 30–45 minutes over 25 km — the risk is arriving after dark without a car booked.

Get around

Lodge driver or a taxi you know between clusters; walk only inside a cluster and only by day.

Passes
No pass. Agree taxi fares before you get in; the meter is not used.
Late at night
No rail or metro; taxis get scarce after dark, so plan the last ride back before sunset.

See and do

    An animal rescue centre with a nature trail beside Kenyatta Road: go in the morning for 90 minutes; the easiest first stop after landing.

    A large, busy market for produce, cloth and crafts: go before noon for an hour with a driver waiting, and only the cash you need.

Mamma Mia (Old Town)
A sit-down restaurant on Paul Kagame Road in the Old Town: go at lunch or an early dinner and get a lodge car back before dark.

Sleep

Capital Hill (hotel)
A business hotel near Capital Hill with a 24-hour desk: closest to the government district and the road north to the airport.
Old Town (lodge)
First-timers: a lodge in the Old Town or nearby suburbs with a staffed gate, a car at the door and safe parking; the airport run is 30–45 minutes.

Language

English is official and used in business, schools and tourism; Chichewa (Chinyanja) is the everyday language in the centre and south, Tumbuka in the north. Greetings matter more than speed.

  • 'Moni' (hello), 'Muli bwanji?' (how are you?), 'Zikomo' (thank you, also 'excuse me').
  • WhatsApp is the main channel for drivers, lodges and guides.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: 'Moni, muli bwanji?' and wait for the reply before business; avoid: Launching straight into a question
  • Handshake: Soft handshake, left hand touching your right forearm as respect; avoid: Crushing grips or one-hand passing to elders
  • Clothing: Knees and shoulders covered in towns; avoid: Swimwear off the beach
  • Villages: Ask for the chief or a local guide before walking through; avoid: Wandering into compounds with cameras
  • Food: Accept a little of what is offered; avoid: Eating with the left hand

Red lines

  • Do not photograph government buildings, police, the military or the airport.
  • Ask before photographing people; do not photograph children without asking an adult.
  • Cover shoulders and knees away from your lodge.

  • Fake e-visa sites: Use only the official portal linked from immigration.gov.mw.
  • Street money changers: Short counts and fake notes; change at banks or licensed bureaux only.
  • Curio 'pen friends' and sponsorship requests: Friendly chat that ends in a request for school fees; give through registered projects.
  • Fixed-price boat trips that shrink: Agree duration, snorkel gear and lunch in writing before paying.
  • Police 'fines' at roadblocks: Stay polite, ask for an official receipt; lodge drivers know the routine.
