Give Lier half a day to one night from Antwerp (15 min by train): the centre is walkable in 2–3 h, so it works as a stop, not a base.
Lier is a small Flemish town of about 36,000 people southeast of Antwerp, with a compact medieval core: a UNESCO beguinage, the Zimmertoren with its astronomical dials, a Gothic church and a 14th-century belfry. Trains from Antwerp take about 15 minutes and the station is a 10-minute walk from the Grote Markt, so most travellers see it as a half-day add-on to Antwerp or Mechelen rather than a place to sleep.

Walk. Every sight in the centre is within about 15 minutes on foot. De Lijn buses cover the town and neighbouring villages; the Nete canal towpath and surrounding cycle routes are the reason to rent a bike. Do not cycle through the market.
