Useful apps for Liechtenstein: transport, maps, translation

Liechtenstein is small enough that you do not need a deep app stack, but the country sits between two non-EU countries and its transport is run by small operators, so the right four apps save real time.

Start with LIEmobil, the local bus network that links Vaduz, Schaan, Balzers, Triesenberg and Malbun. It also runs the cross-border routes to Sargans and Buchs in Switzerland and Feldkirch in Austria, which is how most visitors arrive. Check timetables and buy or validate tickets in the app where supported; otherwise pay the driver. Fares are modest and a day pass usually beats single tickets if you make three or more trips (check).

SBB Mobile covers the Swiss side: trains to Sargans or Buchs, then the bus connection. It is the reliable way to see whether your connection works on a Sunday or public holiday, when some services thin out. For the Austrian side, use the national rail app or the operator's own site (check).

Google Maps handles Vaduz on foot well and is adequate for driving, but bus departure data for LIEmobil can lag. Cross-check any bus time against LIEmobil before you commit, especially the last evening service back to Sargans or Buchs.

MeteoSwiss is the practical weather source for the Alps here. Malbun sits at around 1,600 m and conditions change fast; check the forecast and webcams before buying a lift ticket or starting a ridge walk.

There is no Uber and no well-known local ride-hailing app. Taxis exist in Vaduz and can be booked by phone through your hotel; expect meter fares and limited late-night availability (check).

For money, a banking or card app with travel notifications switched on is the useful piece. Contactless cards work in most shops, hotels and restaurants; keep a little cash for small kiosks and rural buses (check). See the cards and ATMs page for the detail.

If you are coming from outside the EEA, a travel eSIM covering both Switzerland and Liechtenstein avoids the roaming trap described below.

Lock your network manually. Liechtenstein is in the EEA roaming area, but along the Rhine your phone often picks up a Swiss network, which is not covered by EEA roaming rules. Choose your home or eSIM network by hand and watch for a data warning.

Download offline. Save the Liechtenstein map area, your bus and train tickets, and your accommodation address before you cross the border. Coverage in the Malbun valley is patchy in places (check).

Screenshot the last bus. Evening services back to Sargans, Buchs and Feldkirch are limited. A screenshot of the timetable removes any doubt when signal drops.

Keep a paper backup for one thing: the phone number of a Vaduz taxi firm, taken from your hotel's card. If your battery dies, that is the number you will want.
