Voykit pocket guide · Fiji
Levuka
Go for 2 nights: the old capital is a one-street UNESCO town, walkable in a day, and the boat from Suva eats 4.5 h each way.
Levuka was Fiji's capital from 1874 to 1883 and its 19th-century waterfront is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The town itself is small — one main street, a museum, a club and 199 steps up Mission Hill — so two nights covers it, with a day left for Ovalau's west coast or the reef islands. It is a slow, hot, low-key stop, not a beach resort.

Get around
Walk. The historic strip is flat and short; the rest is steps and hills. Taxis can be hired by the day for the island loop, and local buses run to the airstrip and villages. Carrier trucks (bench seats under a tarpaulin) are cheap but unscheduled — do not rely on one to get you back.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say 'bula' with a smile; 'namaste' with Indo-Fijians; avoid: Ignoring a greeting on a village path
- Village entry: Come with a guide and kava, hats off, shoulders covered; avoid: Walking in alone or taking photos before the welcome
- Kava circle: Sit cross-legged, clap once before and three times after your cup; avoid: Stepping across the circle or pointing your feet at the tanoa
- Head: Keep your head lower than seated elders when passing; avoid: Touching anyone's head, even a child's
- Sundays: Keep it quiet near villages and go to church if invited; avoid: Swimming or loud music by village beaches
- Gifts and asking: Bring small gifts for hosts (kava, groceries, school supplies); avoid: Handing out sweets or money to children
- Kerekere: Understand that sharing is expected between relatives; you may be asked for things; avoid: Taking offence — a polite no is fine
Scams and watch-outs
- Ferry and bus links to Suva are roughly daily but weather-dependent: confirm the day before and keep a buffer for your flight home.
- Carrier trucks and some village buses have no fixed timetable; you can be stranded if you plan around them.
- Village visits: ask before entering, dress modestly (shoulders and knees), and do not walk through a village with a hat on or carrying a bag on your shoulder (check local custom).
- Limited ATMs and card acceptance in town: bring enough Fijian dollars in cash.
- Cyclone season runs Nov–Apr; the ferry can be cancelled (check before travel days).
Levuka is a small town and the main street is short and walkable; crime levels are not independently verified (check). The real risks are heat and sun on the Mission Hill steps, slippery reef shoes on coral, and ferry cancellations in cyclone season.
